New Mexico’s electricity consumption is driven primarily by the industrial sector, which accounted for 40% of usage in 2022. Commercial and residential sectors follow at 33% and 27%, respectively. Since 2018, demand has seen a gradual rise, reflecting economic growth and increased industrial activity.
Despite this, total in-state consumption remains relatively stable, with much of the state’s electricity generation supporting exports to neighboring states. Seasonal trends are evident, with demand peaking in summer due to cooling and in winter due to heating, reinforcing the need for flexible and reliable energy resources.
These consumption patterns highlight New Mexico’s role as a growing energy exporter and as a state with rising internal industrial demands. Planning for storage, grid upgrades, and climate-responsive energy use will be critical in supporting both roles.
