New Mexico in Data

By: Jean-Lucien Fonquergne, Hadrian Keith and Gabriel Frimpong

Objective

New Mexico plays a key role in the U.S. energy landscape — as both a major producer of fossil fuels and a state with immense renewable energy potential. As the energy needs increase and the need for energy transition accelerates, understanding thanks to reliable data where we are and where we are headed is critical for informed decision-making across public, private, and academic sectors.

“New Mexico in Data” is an initiative of the NMEI Consortium designed to make state-level energy data accessible, interactive, and actionable.

This platform brings together key insights from public datasets to highlight trends in energy production, consumption, emissions, and beyond.

Whether you are a policymaker, researcher, industry leader, or student, it offers a clear, data-driven view of New Mexico’s evolving energy landscape.

Energy Data

New Mexico Energy Production and Consumption

Consumption and Production (Physical Units)

Consumption and Production (Btu)

This dataset provides a comprehensive overview of New Mexico energy production and consumption trends across multiple fuel types and sectors—including aviation fuel, asphalt, biodiesel, renewable diesel, coal, electricity, petroleum products, and various forms of renewable energy—alongside data on electric vehicles, charging infrastructure, energy efficiency (e.g., capacity factors), and key economic and demographic indicators.

New Mexico Energy Prices and Expenditures

Energy Prices and Macroeconomic Indicators

This dataset presents annual average prices and infrastructure data across New Mexico energy systems—including the cost of fuels (e.g., coal, natural gas, gasoline, kerosene, biodiesel, propane), electricity rates by sector, electric vehicle adoption and charging infrastructure, and key macroeconomic indicators.

Energy Expenditure Data

This dataset contains annual energy expenditure data across the New Mexico economy, detailing how much different sectors (transportation, industrial, commercial, residential, electric power) spend on various fuels (coal, natural gas, petroleum products, renewables, electricity, etc.), while also including capacity factors, EV and charging infrastructure statistics, GDP, and population metrics.
