New Mexico Electricity Mix

Over the past two decades, New Mexico has dramatically transformed its electricity generation mix. Wind energy now leads the state’s power production at 38%, followed closely by natural gas at 36%. This is accompanied by a shift away from coal, which once dominated the grid, now accounting for under 20%, reflecting both plant retirements and strategic investment in renewables.

The data shows a sharp rise in wind and solar output since 2010, supported by favorable policies and large-scale infrastructure projects like the SunZia transmission line. Natural gas continues to play a balancing role, stepping in when renewable output fluctuates, ensuring grid reliability.

As the state pushes toward its 2045 carbon-free electricity target, integrating more renewables while maintaining stability will be key.
